Summer Meetings Update

Hey guys,

We just thought you might like a little update on our summer meetings pattern. Those who were there last Wednesday were informed that unless they heard otherwise, to assume that it was the last meeting of the academic year. At the moment we are waiting to hear back from the SU as to whether or not we can use the Space or the Club Rooms during the summer months. We will hopefully hear back from them on this towards the end of this week and will of course update you on this as soon as we get the information! Due to this, please work under the assumption that until you hear otherwise, there will be no weekly meetings until September.

We will update you as soon as we hear any more information!

EGM on Wednesday

Hey guys,

For those of you who haven’t been there for the past few weeks, there will be an EGM on Wednesday at 8pm. Currently there are only two items on the agenda:

  • Discussion and re-allocation of responsibilities of PRO
  • Proposed change to constitution for proxy votes

Due to the nature of the meeting, motions can be proposed at the EGM.

Star Trek Free Cinema Outing

Hey guys,

For those of you who were not there on Wednesday, the tickets have been booked and the free outing to see Star Trek will be this Friday at the Movie House Cinema on the Dublin Road. The movie will begin at 9.10pm, however please be there no later than 8.30pm. It is anticipated that it will be very busy, and this will give us time to distribute the tickets to yourselves and to get snacks and drinks. If you are not there by 8.30pm you will be running the risk of forfeiting your seat! We hope to see you all there :)

The minutes of our AGM will be available for download shortly.

Exciting news!

Hey guys,

In the last update I promised you all that some exciting news, and in this rather long update here it is :)

Firstly, Action Cancer are holding the local premiere of the new Star Trek film. It will be occurring on Thursday May 7th, in the Movie House Cinema on the Dublin Road with a VIP reception beginning at 6.30pm and the film beginning at 7.30pm. While fancy dress is optional, there will be prizes for the best Star Trek related costume as well as other prizes. Tickets cost £10 and are available by either emailing kstratton@actioncancer.org or by phoning Kyla on 028 9080 3344.

Next, the QFT have just revamped their website and released their new schedule. I’ve just had a look through the schedule and noticed that there are two nights which should be outstanding for Science Fiction fans. On Saturday May 2nd at 10.15pm, they are showing Back to the Future, and on Sunday May 3rd they are showing all three Matrix films back to back beginning at 3.15pm. Tickets for the Matrix screenings are £5.50 for adults, £3.50 for students, £4.50 for Queen’s staff and further discounts are available for QFT Members. Tickets for Back to the Future are more expensive unfortunately, £8.00 for adults, £7.00 for students, no discount for Queen’s staff and discounts are available for QFT Members. According to the QFT booking office, this increase in price is because it is part of their QFT Late event, which will include several other things in addition to the film. Unfortunately for both of these films it does not state exactly how much the discounts are.

Now for those of you unable to make Action Cancer’s Star Trek premiere on Thursday May 7th, we will be hosting a free cinema outing for all paid up members. The film is released for general audiences on Friday May 8th, and unfortunately there are no film times released as of yet. We will be going to see it on either Friday May 8th if we can get tickets, or Friday May 15th. This second date is open for debate, and if there is sufficient demand it can be moved back earlier in the week. To try and get tickets for the premier on May 8th, you will need to inform us by no later than 11.59pm on Sunday May 4th. To register your interest in going, please email chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk or inform Ryan, Thomas or David at our meeting this coming Wednesday.

Almost done now. QUB Dragonslayers would like you all to know that pre-registration for Q-Con is now open. Q-Con, for those of you who have never been before, is the annual gaming convention of the Dragonslayers Gaming and Anime Society. It is entering its sixteenth year, and for the past few years now has filled the entire Student’s Union building with gaming and anime fun. It runs between June 26th and 28th this year. The weekend includes roleplaying, board games, LARPs, War Games, CCGs, console games, a PC LAN, Anime Screenings, Cosplaying, Special Events, Special Guests and much much more! Pre-registration tickets will cost £10/€12, and accommodation is on offer for £17/€20 per night. Availability of accommodation is limited, so pre-register early to avoid disappointment. Finally if you pre-register before June 12th you will be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win an X-Box 360. Visit www.q-con.org.uk for more details.

Last, but not least, we just want to remind you that our AGM is coming up and will be occurring on Wednesday May 6th beginning at 8pm. Please check out the Committee Details page on the website for a list of available committee positions. If you wish to stand for a committee position and are unable to attend the AGM, please email chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk with the details. Please include your name, student number if you are standing for one of the student only positions, and a brief speech which may be used if there is more than one candidate standing for the position. While all the committee positions can, and for some more than others, involve some hard work they are extremely worthwhile and look fantastic on your CV when applying for placements and/or jobs.

We’re Back!

Hey guys,

We all here hope you have had a fantastic Easter. We’re back this Wednesday, April 22nd in our usual time and place of Club Rooms 3 and 4 in the Student’s Union between 6pm and 10pm. We’ve got some exciting news and plans coming up so keep your eyes peeled on our websites and your email inboxes!

Finally, in this update anyway, our AGM is coming up. It will be occurring on Wednesday May 6th beginning at 8pm. This is a very important day in the running of any club as it allows you, our members, to elect the leadership for the next year! To see what positions are available in the society, take a look at the Committee Details page on our website. Certain positions must be held by registered QUB students, for the next year these are: Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Members Representative. Holding any of these positions is extremely worthwhile and looks fantastic on your CV!

So keep your eyes peeled for more updates very soon, and we hope to see you all tomorrow evening!

Below is a list of all the people that have shown interest. URGENT – Meeting Cancelled Wednesday April 8th 2009

Hey guys,

Sorry for the extreme short notice. We have just found out that the SU building will be closing early tomorrow evening at 7pm. Due to this we will be unable to have our weekly meeting. We will hopefully be returning on Wednesday April 22nd in our usual time slot and we will of course keep you updated on this.

Additionally our AGM will be occurring soon. The exact date is yet to be confirmed. If you are a student, either full or part-time, please consider standing for any of the available positions which you can view on the Committee Details page on our website. It is extremely worthwhile and looks fantastic on your CV! Feel free to email any of the existing committee members or chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk for more details on exactly what each position entails.

Finally, there are still slots available on our Laserquest trip on Wednesday April 15th. This will be occurring in the O-Zone in Belfast starting at 7pm. Please email chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk if you wish to attend, can’t remember if you said you’d attend, or if you are now unable to attend :-) We will stop taking names for this at 11:59pm on Wednesday April 8th so that we can make the booking with the O-Zone.

*EDIT*

The following is a message from Malcolm (mjh on the forums)

Despite the closure of the Union there will be the usual gathering in Bar 12 (near Botanic Station) this evening for those who wish to chat about anything scifi, fantasy, horror or even other topics. There will also hopefully be the latest edition of NaON available.

Last meeting before Easter

Hey guys,

This coming Wednesday (8th) will be our last meeting before Easter. The SU is closed on Wednesday 15th, and we are as yet unaware as to when they fully reopen without reduced opening hours. We will of course keep you all updated on this :)

This week, we will hopefully be trying out a “model UN of the stars”. This will work sort of similar to how a regular model UN works, however instead of picking a country to represent, you pick a race from whatever Sci-Fi or Fantasy setting you wish.

Finally, we just want to remind you that there are still 9 places remaining on the laserquest trip. The laserquest will be taking place on Wednesday April 15th sometime between 6pm and 10pm. If you are interested, or can not remember if you signed up, please email chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk to confirm :)

What do you want us to do?

Hey guys,

Here’s the deal. The club exists to give you what you want. As such, we really need your input on what you want to do/see/whatever. So the purpose of this thread is to suggest events, trips, anything that we as a society can do together.

You can give your input on this thread on our forums. Should you be a paid up member and not able to post on the forums, either drop an email to chairbeing@qubscifi.org.uk or a Private Message on the forums to SideSwipe. In your email/PM please include your forum username :)

Quiz Night

Hey guys,

Bring along your general knowledge and geekery hats tonight folks as it’s quiz night. For those of you who have attended our quiz nights in the past, you’ll know that our questions start off easy and then get harder as the round goes on :) For those of you who haven’t, prepare to find out!

Tonight we hope to bring you a selection of rounds including Science Fiction, Fantasy and Music!

Our quiz will be starting shortly after 6.30pm to give you all time to get there. If you can’t make it on time, don’t worry. Latecomers will all be welcome to join any of the teams that are playing when they arrive :) We hope to see you there.
